Taking Responsibility

The girls have started helping me around the house; by choice I might add.
Throwing diapers in the trash. Putting their cups and snack bowls in the sink.
I took their initiative as a good sign that maybe they're ready for a daily responsibility. A small one of course, like feeding the dogs.

Each morning and evening, we make a point to stop and go do our special job. They each take turns putting the food in the dog bowls. They even check to see if the dogs need water for me. If so, they'll say "doggies drink Moma!"

This week, we're dog sitting for a friend so they get one extra bowl to fill up. Allison is such a sweetie and the girls love having her over.

I think it's important that I work to teach them at a young age about responsibility. In my opinion, it's just as vital as learning to share or play well with each other. I'm not giving them a list of chores to work through, just a simple task that they see as fun. A small chore that's not a big deal really, but they look forward to feeding their "doggies" every morning and evening. It's good to start somewhere.

The bible says:

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it
Proverbs 22:6
Do you give your little ones small chores to help out? What are your opinions on the matter?

  2. Chores were always a big hassle in the Wiggins' household! But, I was doing my own laundry by the age of 10, plus a myriad of other tasks that my mom knew I was up to. . .not to say that Russ or I particularly enjoyed her confidence in us. . .however, I'm glad that she had it, because I look at the youth that I counsel and wonder "how different would they be if their parents just stopped picking up after them and they had to fend for themselves?!". . .and starting your girls at such a young age will hopefully make it an easier transition when they do have that "list of chores" :)

  3. I like this!!! We have little chores we do too, but the babes think it's great fun! Helping me fold clothes (ok, they just hand them to me!), throwing garbage away, feeding the dog, etc. I like that they love to help, and I agree with you - I think it's very important to teach them while they are young :)

  4. Oh, the darlings!! This is a great age! You're doing a good thing getting them started early, that's for sure. It's still fun for them at this age, so why not?

You reminded me that I need to get started with Judah. Ugh. {Smile, Mama} Guess we'll get started this morning. Hugs!

  5. Precious girls! Yes, we do chores here too - the kids love it at this age, so it's not a problem yet :) Taking diapers to the trash, putting clothes in the washer/dryer, helping empty the silverware from the dishwasher, cleaning up, putting dirty clothes in their baskets, and cleaning up their rooms. I know that sounds like a lot, but it's all done with supervision and since they want to be with me, they just help me do whatever I'm doing. :)
